The struggle between good and evil is perceived differently by everyone around us. Some people believe it is an internal struggle of morality; of the choices between right and wrong. Some people believe it is a slow corruption of innocence, taking hold as we age, and influenced by the ways of the world. Some people believe it is an epic battle at the end of the world. But what if good and evil coexisted together; what if one could not live without the other?

Of Dreams and Nightmares depicts this philosophy; that good cannot live without evil, and evil cannot live without good. In this hand-drawn illustration, the god of Life (in deer form) spreads the essences of both good and evil throughout the Forest of Dreams and Nightmares, both corrupting and cleansing its creations. The god of life leaves black, square-shaped seeds in his footsteps, which plant themselves in the fabric of reality. These seeds latch onto and torture the souls of the plants and animals that dwell in the forest, and blossom into voids. To generate balance, the god of life’s antlers shed star-like points of light, which settle on the forest and cleanse its crying souls. It is an endless, unceasing cycle and will never be broken, for the Forest of Dreams and Nightmares cannot be found by humans, and thus, the cycle will never be obstructed.

Cool :) Yea it's a brilliant film. One of my favourites. I guess that's why your picture really resonates with me :ahoy:

I'm very glad you like it. :)

very cool idea. I love the lines in the trees. One thing that bothers me a little is that the geometric shapes either don't dominate enough space, or are just to abrupt in areas. Perhaps if they followed the organic shapes and eventually turn to complete geometric shape. Other than that, way to go!

Thanks for the feedback! I had actually made some square-shadows underneath the deer god in the water as 'footsteps' with ripples, and more along the tree trunks... but I made some mistakes with the line widths and so I filled it in instead. I appreciate what you mean, however! They are meant to be 2D vortexes in space or latching onto objects; I just couldn't manoeuvre them how I wanted though - more practice needed, I guess. Is there any space in particular you feel needs them? I am always happy to go back and make changes. :)

I've gone back and had a proper look - I think I can achieve this in the trees, along the bark and the leaves! I think I should leave the water well alone, though. :)
